Secular democracy and its critics

“Secularism” and “secular”are very much maligned words. Partly because they are not really understood by some people. But also because some religious people feel threatened by the words.

But they shouldn’t. Despite some attempts to equate the words with atheism and oppose them to religion they really don’t mean either of these. Unfortunately, though, some people insist on using the words that way.

Consulting dictionaries is not always helpful either because they usually list several different meanings.

What does “secular” mean?

However, when we use words like “secular” and “secularism” to describe our modern society definitions equating them with atheism or opposition to religion are completely inappropriate. When applied to society the meaning is more aligned with neutrality towards religion and other beliefs. As the cartoon implies.

So proper dictionary definitions of “secular” include:

  • “Not controlled by a religious body or concerned with religious or spiritual matters;”
  • “Worldly rather than spiritual;”
  • “Not specifically relating to religion or to a religious body: eg secular music;”
  • “Of or relating to the worldly or temporal;”
  • “Of or relating to worldly things as distinguished from things relating to church and religion; not sacred or religious; temporal; worldly.”

And so on. You get my point.

Secularism - Monk doing monastery accounts

Not at all opposed to religion, or denying a religious participation. It just describes procedures which cannot be appropriately treated as “sacred” (whatever that means).

I have the picture of a medieval monk sitting at a desk in an old monastery. A candle by his side he is doing the monastery accounts. He is doing secular work. (I don’t think even the most convinced religious apologists would consider accountancy “sacred.”)

We are all “secularists”

All of us, no matter our beliefs, are involved in secular activities most of the time.

As a scientist I worked alongside scientists with all sorts of beliefs. Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, Muslims, agnostics, and so on. Bloody hell, one of them was even a member of the ACT Party.

However, despite our different “world views”, we did our work, our scientific research, in basically the same way. We were all involved in collecting evidence, hypothesising, testing ideas against reality, producing effective scientific theories and validating them against reality. Our religious beliefs did not change the way we did our job.

Scientific research is secular – but done by people who hold many beliefs.

Most of you will also be doing secular jobs. If you are an accountant, a plumber, a builder, or whatever, your religious beliefs just don’t influence your work. Your job is secular. And you don’t feel any conflict with that.

Democracy secular by definition

We can look on society in much the same way. Of course opinions and beliefs inevitably do intrude into political and social activity. But while we can express religiously derived views we are actually dealing with a society which does not have uniform religious beliefs. Our society is pluralist. Religious opinions are very diverse. So while in New Zealand you can argue for an ethical or political position because your god told you it was correct or it is written in your “holy” book, such arguments are completely ineffective (outside your direct religious community).

This inevitably means that simple religious arguments cannot carry any weight politically or socially. The sensible protagonist will look for arguments which have wider appeal.

And that’s how it should be. Our political system is democratic, Our society is pluralist. No one belief can be imposed by loyalty. We have to engage in the market of ideas, putting forward our best arguments. And the best arguments are the ones that most people can respond to. Religious arguments just aren’t effective.

Consequently, in democratic, pluralist societies the political and social activity, the live discussion of ideas and decision-making about the best social or political situation, is inevitably secular. It must be to be democratic.

Our politics and social activity is secular even though the participants may hold a range of religious views.  It is secular because it is democratic.

So those religious apologists who argue that modern society somehow
“privileges” secularism over religion are making a basic category error. It’s like a political party condemning democracy, the very institution which provides them with a venue for their activity.

Unless of course, they would prefer a society which was undemocratic, but placed them in power while denying all other parties the freedom to exist.

Perhaps this is the way these religious apologists complaining of the “privileging” of secularism see it. Perhaps they would like to return to a society where there religious arguments were the only ones allowed in public discussion.

Consulting a dictionary, then a legal dictionary, some legal commentary, some philosophy textbooks, perhaps the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy which has a definitive article of the whole religion in public life debate and helpfully lists all the key resources for all sides of the debate showing that Ken’s justifications for the doctrine of religious restraint have been rather thoroughly debunked in the literature, might just aid you in the confusion created by dictionaries listing “several different meanings”.
    Or you could just follow the links included above to read the definitions cited on my blog (written by a philosopher and a legal scholar specialising in this debate). At our site you will find an overview of the debate complete with footnote references to academic sources (we didn’t just make our definitions up ).
    But I suppose if you’re into ‘rah rah atheism’ you don’t need to check what professional philosophers and legal theorists have said on the matter, a retired fertiliser scientist said it so you believe it!

    The Objection
    So what is the problem with appealing to divine commands in social ethics? Pastafarian theological convictions ought to impact the whole of life both in the private and public spheres; this is what is meant by the idea of an “undivided life”, where his Divine Noodliness is Lord of all aspects of our lives.

    Yet this consequence of Pastafarian faith conflicts with a pervasive contemporary attitude: the view that that religion is fundamentally a private matter. It is accepted that a Pastafarian is free to utilise theological convictions and kitchen utensils when they make decisions about their own life but in a pluralistic society it is increasingly deemed inappropriate to bring such convictions or devices into public discussions about morality, law, politics, economics, education, scholarship and so on. The desire to influence society with fine dining etiquette or to convert others to the faith is viewed by many as an intolerant desire to impose one’s private views onto others.

    It is widely accepted that gastronomical convictions can govern the kitchens and the private lives of hosts of Pastafarian believers yet we are told that the public square – government, public policy, the courts, the academy, education, business, arts, media, etc – should be secular only. The problem is nicely summarised by Tuscan Cookbook. Pastafarian theological convictions ought to impact the whole of life both in the private and public spheres; this is what is meant by the idea of an “undivided life”, where His Divine Noodliness is Lord of all aspects of our lives……

    “Usually JAQing off (aka a type of Playing Devil’s Advocate) is a form of Trollism where rather than make declarative statements that you might then have to defend, you disguise the statement as a question and coyly claim that “I’m Just Asking a Question.” For example, in climate Denial you can JAQ off the false statement “CO2 is insignificant as a greenhouse gas” by simply prefixing it with “but isn’t it true that … ?”
    JAQing off has several advantages:
    1. you get to make the claim without having to defend it beyond the initial statement;
    2. it can make Trolls indistinguishable from people who are legitimately curious or confused and hence are less likely to be simply dismissed as a Troll;
    3. If the Troll is dismissed without an answer it will look as if the science proponent is intolerant and/or unable to answer the question;
    4. if the science proponent cannot answer the question, the point goes to the Troll;
    5. it will pull the science proponent into a long explanation of the facts if they are able to do so, at the very least wasting their time if nothing else.
    The disadvantage of JAQing off is that the questioner cannot pretend innocence and then suddenly start responding to the answer, at least not without exposing themselves as a Troll. To engage in any depth it is necessary to pretend a series of linked “yeah, but…” questions, and those can only be carried so far without exposing the deceit.
    For the Troll another problem is that “the question” is necessarily limited in the amount of alleged information that it contains, at least if it is to remain plausible as an innocent question. However, it creates a context where the science proponent get’s to lay out as many facts as they are able in order to answer “the question”. As a form of public theatre this can backfire badly. As such JAQing off is not that effective a technique when engaging informed science proponents.
    In print form JAQing off obviously does not suffer from the disadvantages associated with a back and forth exchange. However, it is not credible to JAQ off an issue in depth without revealing that you are being duplicitous, so it is not useful to approaching the main subject this way. Instead the way to do it is to JAQ off a number of associated issues with only one or two questions each such that they cast doubt on the actual facts.”

    It’s not worth debating Mick on the Maori issue – but notice:

    1: He did not provide any information of road diversion. He just doesn’t know enough about the event to know what consultation occurred or if any changes were made in the road plans or route. presumably he is opposed to public consultation when the skin colouyt of the peoiple involved is not white.

    2: He is completely wrong on the issue of menstruating women in Te Papa. That event occurred within a small group of museum workers and was quickly and icorrectly escalated to a public event. Unfortunately racists tend to do that sort of thing and the media plays along.

Should we automatically accept everything the guvmint says as true, especially if they are after our money? Just a thought. Why does the guvmint complain when they create a system open to abuse? I can put a lot of thought into it. Where do you want to start? Just a question. What is your definition of the “real world”? Is it smelling roses on a rainy Sunday, sitting in front of your PC, or jogging along the path listening to your iPod? Just a question. See above. Just a question. Wasn’t he the guy who quit his job at the Courier Mail after his losing debate in Brisbane against Monckton , the man that no credible person in NZ will debate with?Just a thought. Does Cedric pass the Turing Test? Where did he get us Richard? Into Iraq and Afganistan? Just a thought. You met the Australian Sex Party? Did they give you one of those tattoos? Why would she advise Muslims to convert to Christianity? (Punishable by death under Islam law) and also, why should she want to speak about it at an atheist conference? So why do NZers have all this Maori nonsense about Taniwhas and such like? Why did you mention this ACT party? Is it a religious group? Just a question. No answer Ken? What has this “Act party” got to do with secularism? Do you have some personal axe to grind with this group? Come on, spit it out. Don’t be shy. Just a thought. Just a little question, Ken Ken is a retired fertilser scientist? Libertarian? So what is it then? Don’t you think this is a little shallow? These supposed “intellectuals” have in their midst a woman who is opening exploiting her gender with hard core porn. How’s that for a starter Nick? BTW, Nick, please explain to me why your comment about this “Act party” is not puerile sarcasm? I guess that’s not interesting though, is it Nick? Maybe you are just all hypocrites? WTF has the treaty got to do with these mythical monsters?

  53. Was this post about Norway or something? Do you need to be rebooted Cedric? Jacking off? Odd thing to say. Do you need some special superpowers to understand this bullshit? Which original doco Ken?Just asking a question. Which of the people in the video are ex-scientists or engineers? Can you name them? Just asking a question. Richard Lindzen Engineer or ex-scientist? John Christy Engineer or ex-scientist? Fred Singer Engineer or ex-scientist? Nir Shaviv Engineer or ex-scientist? Phillip Stott Engineer or ex-scientist? Paul Reiter Engineer or ex-scientist? I was just asking him a question. Maybe there is some confusion? Why does this matter? I am confused. But aren’t those guys in my video climate scientists? Were their voices tampered with in the making of the video? We might be kidnapped by Aliens because of Global Warming. Look, it’s in the Guardian, based on research between NASA and Penn State. Would they lie to us? NASA didn’t lie about the moon landings. NASA didn’t lie about global warming. NASA didn’t lie about the space aliens. What are we going to do about the aliens? What about the children? NASA wouldn’t lie to us. We need to do something! How did you write this article without a computer? Has this “global government” thing been debunked too? How do you know Monckton’s visit was a failure? So it was a failure then? Not a success? Why do they use the term “Right Wing Think Tank”? Are there no “Left Wing Think Tanks”? What do these mean anyway? Just a thought. So, Cedric, what does the term “Right Wing” mean to you? So what is a libertarian then? Right or left? Would you agree that the NZ Maori parties are “right wing”, using this definition? Seems a little far fetched, don’t you think.? Can I ask you a question every minute of an entire 8 hour working day? Can I? Did you check your sources Ken? Maybe they are making it up? Just a thought. Is this correct? Why does it take 39 hours to process one FOI request? Why don’t they just release all the data on a public website and be done with it? This “policy on climate change” will not also come at a significant cost to the taxpayer? Just a thought? It’s their own stupid fault. What did they expect? Is everyone who issues an FOI request a “denier”?
