Collectors’ items?

little-darwinI watched a lecture the other night where the speaker had a Charles Darwin doll sitting on his lectern. I guess this is another thing we will see during the Darwin Year – Darwin merchandise.

It seemed quite cute and I wonder if they are available in New Zealand? This one is part of the “Little Thinkers” Set of dolls.

einstein-dollI quick search shows they aren’t the only such dolls available – there is also an Einstein doll! This raises the prospects of a new collection – dolls of great scientists.

What about others? As a chemist I would like a Mendeleev doll – I am sure he had the face for it.

  2. @1 (aka T.H. Huxley):

Your post reminded me to look up Browne’s books on Amazon. The hardcover editions seem to be out of print, but I guess the soft-backs still have all the illustrations.

(I’ve read Desmond’s book on Huxley for what it’s worth.)

  3. Do you mean Janet Browne’s 2-volume biography of CD? No illustrations that I recall, alas! But the Beagle letters (which has an introduction by Browne)has the odd illustration – not as lavish as the commemorative version of the Origin though.

Janet Browne really is an excellent writer 🙂 I prefer her CD biography to the one by Desmond.

  4. Alison – maybe you will be interested in this video (then again maybe you are already aware) –
    Darwin’s Legacy | Lecture 3.
Its one of the videos in the Darwin’s Legacy course at Stanford University. Haven’t see this one yeat but Eugenie Scott and Daniel Dennett gave interesting lectures.

  5. Thanks, Ken – I hadn’t seen this & I’ll look forward to viewing the series (when I get a bit of ‘free’ time, haha). Sounds like it could be something that my 2nd-year evolutionary biology class would find useful.

  6. A good friend of mine, Mer, who used to be at the Otago Zoology Dept, has the top Darwin doll. It’s really adorable.

Still, it doesn’t top the plush viruses and bacteria you can buy from thinkgeek.com. “I have ebola.”

  7. Darwin’s Reverse: Man asE=mc²/2
2009 is the end of Einstein’s space-jail of time and Fraud symbol E=mc²
    Joenahhas1958@yahoo.com
Time is not a structure like space to allow space-to time-back to space jumping claimed by Physicists regardless of what physicists have to say about it because Physics is a business and not necessarily science or scientific and like every business it comes with fraud and fraud is Einstein’s space-time (x, y, z, it) continuum that led to fraud symbol E=mc² and yes I am saying that 109 years of Nobel prize winners physics and physicists are all wrong and space-time physics is based on scientific fraud. When “results” expected and “No” discovery, Physicists rigged Physics for grant money since the start of the industrial revolution. Physics today is at least 51 % fraud!
