NZ Blog ranks – May ‘09

I have again ranked New Zealand blogs using the methods described previously (see Ranking methods for NZ blogs). Briefly this involves ranking each blog using four ranking indices (Alexa Rank, Alexa NZ Rank, Technorati Rank and Google Page Rank), five link counts (Google Web Links, Google Blog Links, Yahoo Links, All the Web Links and Alexa Links) and two RSS Subscription Counts (Google Readers Subscriptions and Bloglines Subscriptions). Aggregate ranks are then calculated for each category (Ranking index. Links and RSS Subscriptions) and a total rank combining all eleven indices.

The aggregate ranks are given in the table below. Ranking for the individual indices is available as a pdf document. This time I included 246 New Zealand blogs but details for only the top 100 are given and the rest groups in alphabetical order. The full ranking data for each of the 11 indices is available as a pdf document.

Health warning

ProBlogger warns against becoming a Stats-a-holic:

“The lure of checking your stats is understandable and common to new (and older) bloggers – but it can become an unhealthy obsession that leads to distraction and depression.”

  1. What!?! I bleed onto my keyboard four times a week and the best I can do is being ranked no higher than 201????!!!???

I’m lumped in the same clot as Jesus Was a Titman? C’mon! And, WTF?

It’s because I’m Canadian, right? No one likes us bloody foreigners.

Crap! Do I at least get a ribbon for participation?

  2. Well, bitemymoko, you can always claimed that the process I have used for ranking is “deeply flawed.” And it’s all a meaningless exercise anyway.

Alternatively, why not make you sitemeter stats public (or send me the data for May visits) and I will include it in a NZ blog May ’09 ranking by sitemeter stats. I did this for April (Ranking NZ blogs with sitemeter data). So far I only have access to the stats for about 40 blogs so there is a good chance you will be able to claim ranking in the top 40!

Mind you – I might be inundated with a lot of other previously non-public sitemeter stats which could reduce the chance.

  3. Haha, 1 post a week and rank 168, suck it bitemymoko. Actually I’m half stunned that I’m not #246, obviously the process is deeply flawed and meaningless.

Even so, appreciate the work Ken.

  5. Christchurch City Libraries are happy to have beaten the politicos in our first ranking. Sixtieth is a very respectable placing indeed.

  6. Hi there Ken,

This ranking business, is exactly like the debate, on global climate change.

Using just figures from via links and subscriptions, is always open to debate and variances.

The only figures I ever look at are the numbers, and in May I had 5,907 visitors.

This was a 25% increase over April, but using the convoluted system of Alexa, Technorati, Links, Comments, way you fold your tie etc, you employ –my site has dropped down the tables you just published!

The only weather I look at is what’s happening out my window here in Christchurch, and what I saw, was snow on the weekend.

Global temperatures, rising oceans levels etc – are statistical facts, impossible to get around.

Moving from this analogy – the visitor numbers, like the temperatures, never lie.

So the only definitive ranking-measure, are the share numbers.

If sites don’t want to install an accessible site-meter, that’s their tough-shit.

I appreciate the effort that goes into formulating rankings, but it would be fairer to publish the true rankings, minus the sites without counters, which you have done, rather than attempting to find away around it – which frankly is not accurate, given my example.

No more of this airy-fairy blog-warming-apologists crap.

    Give me the friggin’ numbers!

    Cheers.

    Paul.

  8. Paul – I will post the sitemeter data ratings in the next few days. Currently I have found data for 47 blogs but there are a few that self report so I will wait for them to come in.

I agree that rating systems using the Alexa, Technorati, etc. really don’t correlate well with visit stats. partly because they are averaged over 3 months or 6 months. I have been including data for things like subscriptions and links because people may want to see how they rate with those.

It would be good if more bloggers made their stats public. But I guess even a list of 47 blogs enables others to see how they compare with others while still keeping their data private.

  9. I’m not sure I can agree that site visits are an accurate indicator of popularity. the number of hits I get from search engines that are unrelated to my content is impressive (TMNT pictures and sex toys for example). I would go for something like site visit:page veiw ratio or number of incoming links as more indicative that people are actually interested in what I have to say.

Not to mention that the shear number of post on a blog has got to influence the chances that a random search will lead people to it.

  10. Cool Ken, I look forward to the true-measure, shortly.

If the 3 out of 4 other Kiwi blogs, want to keep their numbers secret, & miss-out on your not inconsiderable efforts compiling a League Table – then so be it, they have the opportunity to come on-board, by installing a meter (takes about 15 minutes) It’s their loss, and not your concern.

Surely it’s go to be way easier going-off the ‘site-meter’ figures alone, than the methodology you are currently employing?

Besides Site-Meter is the fairest system, and the most transparent.

Frankly I don’t care, now many links I have, subscriptions cobblers, Alexa (who?) rankings, how people came to stumble-by my site, where they live, what colour undies they wear, if they are stark-naked when they read my blog – it’s the ‘bottom dollar’ that counts – that’s the numbers.

    Cheers.

    Paul.

  13. Happy as Larry coz some of the schools I work with (and helped get blogging) are in your list rankings, as is my own daughter’s class in her first 4 months of teaching! Not sure what it means, but well done TCTV, St Pius X, Tamaki Tales, Room 10 Grey Lynn School, Creative Voice and Going Places (they’re FIVE year olds!). Funny thing is though, that the school blog in our collection that gets the most visitors/readers doesn’t feature in your list. So how does this work?

    Like

  14. Dorothy, let me know of any NZ blog I have missed. I have only picked up the schools lately so I am sure I still have some to go. Consider also making statmeter data public/accessible. It might be that the school class will rate higher in those – if only because at this stage I have only about 50 blogs with public stats. But also it takes time to build up links, subscriptions and Alexa/Technorati/Google ratings. Anything to encourage the kids.

  15. Hi Ken, Since you asked….
The class blogs from my school are all listed on this page
    http://www.ptengland.school.nz/index.php?family=1,451
Then some of the students who have individual blogs
    http://www.ptengland.school.nz/index.php?family=1,338,13641,15711
The local schools I work with have blogs listed here:
    http://tamaki.net.nz/index.php?family=6,41,2026
    Other schools eg
    http://extremeteam14.blogspot.com/
    http://ithink09.blogspot.com/

etc etc there must be thousands of school kids blogs in NZ this year!

    Good luck!
