December ’15 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

2016 HNY

There are about 300 blogs on the list, although I am weeding out those which are no longer active or have removed public access to sitemeters. (Let me know if I weed out yours by mistake or get your stats wrong).

Every month I get queries from people wanting their own blog included. I encourage and am happy to respond to queries but have prepared a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) people can check out. Have a look at NZ Blog Rankings FAQ. This is particularly helpful to those wondering how to set up sitemeters. Please note, the system is automatic and relies on blogs having sitemeters which allow public access to the stats.

Here are the rankings of New Zealand blogs with publicly available statistics for December 2015. Ranking is by visit numbers. I have listed the blogs in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers. Meanwhile I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter or visitor stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any or wish help adding publicly available stats to your bog.

  3. “He who provides the rating rates” .
Google has a rating system for its database in it propaganda rates highly.

  4. Sure, Mary – but this is a ranking – not a rating.

This ranking is based simply on the visit numbers with no attempt to rate quality.

  5. But yet you rated it on numbers .
By selective not choosing all NZ blogs and by the ranking ( “rating”)info provided to you by private content marketing companies which (like Wikileaks) is unverified and do support a blog content of their choice( bias).
In turn, like the information released to people by the marketing media about a political candidate such as high support for John Key in an poll numbers, the false and unverified information on popularity/rating/ranking then tends to increase numbers.
    Its blog marketing.

  6. Since Mary doesn’t get the meaning of words that she can look up in any dictionary correct, how should we then consider her other claims, all made without evidence?

  7. Mary, if you have any suggestions for improvement of this monthly ranking list I would be happy to hear them. My mind is open – as long as it doesn’t involve too much work. 🙂

However, I suggest you read the Blog Ranking FAQs before putting your fingers to the keyboard as you seem to haved made some unwarranted assumptions.

Let’s attempt to clear these up:

1: This not a list of all NZ blogs and doesn’t pretend to be. Selection is simply on the basis of public availability of statistics – provided automatically by the blog. I do not select the blogs (although from time to time a hunt down any suitable – in the sense of making their stats available). These days new blogs are added after an enquiry from the blogger.

2: Not a single “private content marketing company” provides me with information – in fact, I do not know of any such companies – they don’t interest me.

3: Stats come from automatically harvesting the counters installed on blogs by the blog owner. Counters like Statcounter, Sitemeter, Flagcounter, etc. In that sense the data is objective. I know there are always issues with counting visits but that is understood by me and sensible bloggers. Importantly there is no selection on my part.

4: This does not pretend to rate blogs according to quality. OK, ranking by visit numbers could be interpreted as popularity – but any sensible person does not equate that with authority or reliability. I, in no way, wish to present the ranking as endorsement in that sense. Personally, I think the top ranking blog here is of poor quality and unreliable – and I believe most sensible New Zealanders might agree with me. But the visit numbers are, nevertheless, of interest to many.

    5. Finally, if you wish to see that your favourite NZ blogs are included in the ranking list please provide me with the relevant urls and I will include them. All that is necessary is that they have a counter from which the statistics can be harvested automatically. The blog ranking FAQ gives advice on installing a counter it there isn’t already one on the site.

So, Mary, I look forward to a long list of NZ blogs from you that you think should be included.

  8. Sorry Richard Christie you are wrong, the private marketing ranking is a rating. “A rating is the evaluation or assessment of something, in terms of quantity ( being rated by statistics)”
Loved your other ad hominem disguised as an assumption Mr Christie.

The information I provided to you is on the private marketing quantity rating of websites.
Its ok that you don’t know you are helping to market websites content, most people wouldn’t as the marketing content companies are very clever 🙂

  11. You are unknowingly marketing websites by providing bias and unverified private rankings/ratings.
The partial rating data for the few NZ websites you used was privately collected data (and was unverified).

Google is privately owned search engine and controls these quantities/ numbers/rankings/ratings.
Did you know Google’s “Panda” and later “unnamed” algorithms in 2015 obliterated virtually all of some site’s organic traffic/rankings/ratings.

    Inaccuracies.

Hacking traffic counters and “Click farming” .

    http://whatdoino-steve.blogspot.co.nz/2015/06/sitemeter-out-of-control.html

Yours is a bias private unverified ranking, a rating, for some websites in NZ using google algorithms and site-meter numbers.

If you investigate you will find site meter is owned by myspace, Google has a pre-existing relationship with MySpace that dates back to 2007 when they signed a 3-year, $900 million exclusive deal with the social media platform.”

  12. Mary, you are confused.

Ken’s ranking is neither an assessment of data nor is it an evaluation of data.
Tested against the definition of rating that you supplied.

It is a simple ordering of data, in other words, a ranking.

That is how it is presented and that is how it is described.

    Really, get a life.

  13. Mary, problems with Sitemeter are not new to readers of this blog. I have often commented on specific problems in my monthly rankings posts and specifically in Time to give up on Sitemeter.

    I repeat my point again:

3: Stats come from automatically harvesting the counters installed on blogs by the blog owner. Counters like Statcounter, Sitemeter, Flagcounter, etc. In that sense the data is objective. I know there are always issues with counting visits but that is understood by me and sensible bloggers. Importantly there is no selection on my part.

The data is not “private” – it is publicly available and is made available by blog owners.

The data is also easily verifiable – something you can easily check. Go to a random blog on my list and check the link providing the stats. Tell me if that figure does not verify the figure on my list.

I do not pretend the list is anything more than what it is and readers use it with that knowledge.

As I said, if you can suggest improvements please do so – I am all ears.

But so far your criticisms seem to be wild and completely off target. As Richard suggests, perhaps your comments are a substitute for a life.

  14. Absolutely right Mary, people who get served with this incomplete NZ web traffic rating should understand where the numbers come from, how it is not free from hacking or the influence of google algorithms and most importantly what it is used for.

  15. Mathew, are you suggesting that I am withholding any information on how this list is compiled? If so, could you please support that claim?

  16. Mathew’s link has nothing to do with the statcounter statistics that Ken collates.

I really appreciate your blog rankings for what they are. I enjoy seeing how I’m doing as a relatively new blogger and checking out the other blogs on the list. Thanks!
