June ’16 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

Blog June

There are about 300 blogs on the list, although I am weeding out those which are no longer active or have removed public access to sitemeters. (Let me know if I weed out yours by mistake or get your stats wrong).

Every month I get queries from people wanting their own blog included. I encourage and am happy to respond to queries but have prepared a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) people can check out. Have a look at NZ Blog Rankings FAQ. This is particularly helpful to those wondering how to set up sitemeters. Please note, the system is automatic and relies on blogs having sitemeters which allow public access to the stats.

Here are the rankings of New Zealand blogs with publicly available statistics for June 2016. Ranking is by visit numbers. I have listed the blogs in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers. Meanwhile, I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter or visitor stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any or wish help adding publicly available stats to your bog.

Hi, Im sorry, but some of these numbers are fuzzy math. Ive been on social media and some of the numbers these bloggers are giving out appear not to match up to their actual numbers, a quick search on these blogs, thru various mainstream sites, show their numbers are way lower.

Im sorry, but Im gone thru nearly a dozen of these sites using websites that measure traffic, and all these numbers are way over the top. Surly people arent getting their mates to click and reload.

  4. Maria, you do not understand this process.

The data in the table results from the on-site counters like Sitemeter and Statcounter – they are not “given out” by the bloggers.

You claim you have been comparing the data in he table with “the actual numbers.” Please tell me your source of these “actual numbers.”

  5. My sources are SimilarWeb, compete.com, alexa ranking. etc.

  6. OK now, Maria.

Could you please take a few blogs from the list above and quote me the visit numbers from last month that you get from SimilarWeb, Compete.com, Alexa ranking and etc. Also quote the visit numbers in the list. Include Open Parachute in your comparison.

I want to see what your evidence is for claiming that the numbers in the list are “way over the top.”

If you can provide support for your claim I may well consider incorporating those sources (mind you, I used to use Alexa and found it far from useful for this exercise.)

  7. Hi Ken, I sent you an email thru your email form on this site. I didn’t want to call anyone’s blog out publicly. Ive listed the blog that i think the numbers seems to be wrong and I used the website “Similarweb”. Their numbers are about four times lower than this site for that particular blog.

  8. Maria, I do not enter into discussion via email because I haven’t the time and because it is important that the discussion is public.

You refer to a single bog – Dear Mama. I asked you to give the data from your various sources for several blogs – including Open Parachute. Could you please do this so I can make a proper evaluation.

Incidentally, looking at Similarweb for Open Parachute it gives a current estimate of 7.0 K but has it ranking between 20 and 30 K for most of the year – which I know is highly unrealistic.

Why do you think I should rely on an estimate from Similarweb instead of the actual data from an onboard counter?

Also, you are not providing information from your other sources. For example, how do you get visit numbers from the Alexa ranking?

  9. Its listed at 24K hits per month on similar web, your site has 64K hits a month. Im not too interested in doing more research on the matter, just curious, why the difference?

  10. Maria, I am not sure what your figures relate to.

However, as you say you are not interested in researching the issue perhaps we will leave it at that.

I had investigated Alexa ranking and Compete.pom in the past and decided, in the end, their estimates were not very useful – actual data from the onboard counters seemed the best way to go. And readers appear to accept that.

There are all sorts of issues related to getting visit numbers and different counters do give different results (although Sitemeter and Statcounter are close).

But unless you can show support for your claim that your sources are more objective there seems no point in following up.
