December ’13 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

happy-new-year-2014

There are now almost 300 blogs on the list, although I am weeding out those which are no longer active or have removed public access to sitemeters. (Let me know if I weed out yours by mistake, or get your stats wrong).

Every month I get queries from people wanting their own blog included. I encourage and am happy to respond to queries but have prepared a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) people can check out. Have a look at NZ Blog Rankings FAQ. This is particularly helpful to those wondering how to set up sitemeters.

Please note, the system is automatic and relies on blogs having sitemeters which allow public access to the stats.

Here are the rankings of New Zealand blogs with publicly available statistics for December2013. Ranking is by visit numbers. I have listed the blogs in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers.

Meanwhile I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter or visitor stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any or wish help adding publicly available stats to your bog.

NZ blog rankings update

Just want to clarify the status of the rankings of NZ blogs I have been providing. A blogger had claimed that the system is “broken” – I assure you that is incorrect.

Monthly rankings

These are up to date, largely automatic and reliable. They rely on public access to statcounters, sitemeters, or similar icons installed on blogs.

I post these every month, usually on the first of the following month. You can access an archive (including the latest) of these rankings at the Blog Ranks Page.

I think most people are interested in monthly rather than daily data because these even out fluctuations to some extent

Daily averaged ranking
I had a system which automatically posted a ranking based on daily averages. This enable a snapshot – which of course did not compensate for variations.
Currently that is not operating because of changes to the way statcounter reports it’s data. So far I have not had the expertise or free time to institute an automatic work around. Bloody hell, I dont even have a computer at the moment.

When I get my new computer I will change the settings to remove access to that spreadsheet until it has been corrected.

Hopefully that will prevent this sort of misunderstanding.

Add your blog
Meanwhile, I assure you I am interested in making the rankings as inclusive as possible. The current system already lists more than 250 NZ blogs.

I believe a system using blog visit stats is far more realistic than anything based on a numbers taken from a single ranking source like Alexa. These are often very misleading.

So if you have a NZ blog which is currently unlisted please consider installing a meter which enables public access to your stats. If you do, let me know and I will add your blog to the ranking system.

May ’10 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

Here is the monthly ranking of NZ blogs for May 2010. The 7 day rankings are still available any time at NZ blogs average daily visits.

This monthly ranking has 163 blogs, 12 fewer than the 7 day ranking. This is because monthly figures are not available for sites using the Bravenet counter.

I have done a bit of spring cleaning to remove blogs which no longer make their stats publicly available.

The blogs are listed in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers for June, 2010.

April ‘10 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

Here is the monthly ranking of NZ blogs for  April 2010. The 7 day rankings are still available any time at NZ blogs average daily visits.

This monthly ranking has 150 blogs, 12 fewer than the 7 day ranking. This is because monthly figures are not available for sites using the Bravenet counter.

The blogs are listed in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers for April, 2010.

While monthly rankings don’t change as frequently as the 7 day rankings the longer time may be more useful because small fluctuations average out.

Meanwhile I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any.

Journeys to the Ice – New SciBlogsNZ blogger

Welcome to Matt Woods, who is now blogging at sciblogsNZ. Matt spent some time working in Antarctica on an ice coring reconnaissance expedition. His blog, Journeys to the Ice, will cover Antarctica and Antarctic science.

Matt has also started a podcast. So go to his blog and have a look. perhaps subscribe to the podcast.

SciblogsNZ must now have about 30 bloggers. Its launch a few months ago represented a big step in science communication in New Zealand. I have certainly noticed a large increase in the activity of local science bloggers – and this must be a good thing.

Inevitably it’s led to a few attacks on science blogging by local conspiracy theorists (eg. Poneke and Ian Wishart). Another sign of effective communication, I say.

And Sciblogs NZ is certainly getting attention from others on the internet. It is currently the 5th ranking blog on the NZ blog ranking survey based on sitemeter statistics (see NZ blogs sitemeter ranking – January ‘10).

Update: This post was interpreted by Poneke as another conspiracy (see Taxpayer-funded Science Media Centre gets a curious ratings boost from global warming). Interesting though there seems to be a bit of a battle between sciblogs and Poneke on the rankings. (At the moment Sciblogs is in 4th and Poneke 5th).

NZ blogs sitemeter ranking – January ‘10

There are about 145 NZ blogs with publicly accessible sitemeter stats on this list. Mind you I have found over 800  NZ blogs  and most of them just don’t make their statistics publicly accessible..

The blogs are listed in the table below, together with daily visits and page view numbers averaged over the previous 7 days. The data was that given by the NZ blog ranking tool on Monday January 18th.

This can be seen at NZ blogs average daily visits

Have a look at that tool. Its a way of comparing your own blog’s performance from day to day –  a roller coaster ride which can be quite exciting!

Just be aware that it relies on spreadsheets at Google Docs and data is not always available. If the data is missing or incomplete, wait a while and reload the page. It will eventually show up.

Meanwhile I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any. Continue reading

NZ blog sitemeter ranking – May ’09

I  have managed to find 47 NZ blogs with public sitemeter stats. these are ranked in the table below. The April data was re-ranked from the previous post (Ranking NZ blogs with sitemeter data) to accommodate extra blogs and enable a proper indication of change between April and May.

There may be a few changes as self-reporting blogs post their May data.
Update: The list has been updated to include 53 blogs.

Always interested in hearing about NZ blogs with public sitemeter stats that I have missed. For those bloggers who don’t use sitemeters but are interested have a look at sitemeter, StatCounter, ShinyStat or search for other sitemeters.
