September ’12 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

I understand, from the feedback I get, some people use this NZ Blog Ranking list as an aid in browsing NZ Blogs. Another argument to include your blog here?

Every month I get queries after posting these rankings. Some people are checking for mistakes. Others are wanting their own blog included. I am happy to respond to queries but have prepared a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) people can check out. Have a look at NZ Blog Rankings FAQ.

Here are the rankings of New Zealand blogs with publicly available statistics for September 2012. Please note, the system is automatic and relies on blogs having sitemeters which allow public access to the stats. There are now over 270 blogs on the list, although I am weeding out those which are no longer active or have removed public access to sitemeters.

I have listed the blogs in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers for September, 2012.

Meanwhile I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter or visitor stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any or wish help adding publicly available stats to your bog.

  2. (Sorry, I left this on the wrong blog initially).

    HI Ken

    Interesting ratings for September.

I suspect it would be way beyond your resources but there’s a stat over and above visits and page views that gives an alternative interpretation of the data that interests me. It occurred to me from looking at a number of blogs above me that had no content for the month of September, at least one that’s posted nothing for over six months – I assume it’s robots or some such going to those accounts. Also, by way of example, if I have a solid readership of, say, five people, and I post one post today, then I’ll have five visits. If another blog also has a solid readership of five, but posts ten posts today, then their blog will show 50 visits to my five, even though we have exactly the same readership.

So I’d be very interested in a stat which gives visits divided by posts for the month, as a way of really assessing likely readership. (Also, that would allow all divide by zeros to be taken out for a month when they had no content).

As I said, you wouldn’t have the resources, but if I get time I might run the numbers for the top twenty blogs to compare to my own ….

    Cheers for keeping the rankings.

    Regards Mark

  3. Hi Ken, love your work. Just thought I’d let you know that my blog Cut Your Hair appears twice above, and I think it did last month as well.

  4. Mark, I can understand your interest in such a parameter and no I don’t have the time and resources to get into it so all power to you.

Earlier on I looked at ways of incorporating all sorts of factors and in the end came to the conclusion rating based on visits was the simplest way to go and probably provides what most people want (most aren’t interested in finer details).

Whatever the system there will always be questions. For example with your suggestion I am aware that blogs get plenty of visits aside from recent posts. They would be captured by a simple visits divided by blog post numbers. Some might also argue that a blog that posts more frequently should rank higher than others with the same readership.

Hi Ken – thanks for having my blog included in this list – it’s always exciting to see the ranking each month 🙂

I was wondering – would you be able to change the name of my blog as listed please? From Avalon’s Blog to Avalon’s Guide: emigrate to New Zealand – or just Avalon’s Guide if that’s too long lol.

Many thanks – and cheers 🙂

  7. How do you get your blog to appear on this list, I know of several kiwi blogs, that have higher hits.

  8. Brett: a blog needs to have a publicly available site-meter that Ken can access, and then they need only inform Ken and he’ll track them. That is, they simply need to want to be in the blog rankings: some don’t, which is fair enough ….

  9. Hi Mark,
I have a slow posting frequency (much to my sorrow) and yet I continue to get many visits to my blog, as my existing articles rank highly and get lots of google traffic. This traffic leaves me countless comments (the kind written by high school teachers and students – not spammers) and I spend all my free hours answering them…
Just thought I would point out that posting frequency is not the only variable that matters in terms of determining ‘true’ visitor numbers…

  10. I think that is an important point Amira. There is probably a specific level of interest which is different for different subjects. That’s why I encourage people not to try and compete with blogs which serve different purposes. It’s more meaningful to compare your data with blogs covering the same subject as you. I never compare my data with those for Whale Oil. I am not filling his niche (thank goodness). My comparisons are generally with similar science blogs.

I think this approach gives one a better idea of what to aim for.
