April ’11 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

Cartoon: Gaping Void

I get a steady stream of bloggers requesting inclusion in this ranking list. And I am always happy to oblige.

However, I am nothing if not lazy. The list is basically set up to run automatically. My only effort (besides providing a monthly summary) is to add the blog details to the database.

The key detail I need is a link for the sitemeter used. This enables automatic access to the relevant statistics. Many bloggers do not have a sitemeter installed, or do not allow public access.

So, if you want your blog included in the list (and I certainly do) please make sure you have a suitable sitemeter installed (Sitemeter, Satcounter and Statcounter for WordPress work well). If you are unsure how to do this contact me – I will give what help I can.

Current ranking

Here are the rankings of New Zealand blogs with publicly available statistics for April 2011. These rely on blogs having sitemeters which allow public access to the stats. There are now over 240 blogs on the list.

The 7 day rankings are still available any time at NZ blogs average daily visits. It’s worth following a few blogs on the daily visit list. Ranking is a lot more volatile and it’s interesting to watch blogs move up and down and speculate on the reasons.

The blogs are listed in the table below, together with monthly visits and page view numbers for April, 2011.

While monthly rankings don’t change as often as the 7 day rankings the longer time may be more useful because small fluctuations average out.

Meanwhile I am still keen to hear of any other blogs with publicly available sitemeter or visitor stats that I have missed. Contact me if you know of any.

  1. Great, it worked. 13 days worth.

  2. ReadWriteWeb not in the list?? It would blow all the other stats out 😛

  3. It certainly would. As would the Economist blogs, and the various programming forums that I read daily.

But I gather that this is pretty restricted to kiwi sites.

  4. RWW is administered in NZ (ref). If RWW is excluded then New Zeal should be out also.

  5. Ropata, what’s the link to their site visit stats?

You link just takes me to the herald

I can’t see that they have statcounter or sitemeter in their pages. They do have google analytics and http://www.woopra.com/

I also see that they have the solution to one of the facebook issues that I need to fix 🙂

  7. There are other sites in the list that don’t appear to be New Zealand sites. For example: http://acatofimpossiblecolour.blogspot.com/ and New Zeal which, despite its name, seems to be all about US politics.

I’m not too bothered by this. I am intrigued by the number of dead or zombie sites that generate healthy traffic despite not being updated in months or in some cases years.

  8. Yes, Bill. Generally when I come across a possible blog I try to check for the NZ link. The blogger you mention used to live in NZ and has now moved to Texas. So sometimes the link is a bit tenuous.

Perhaps sometime I should go through an cull out blogs like that and we could all move up a few places. Currently I only remove those whose counters become inoperative.

One day when I have free time!

Meanwhile I don’t worry to much about absolute places – its just handy to see how one copmpares with comperable blogs.

  9. @Ken, I meant to point out another observation from watching these numbers – I promise I only do this occasionally, it’s not an obsession.

Some sites see an increase in traffic after they die. I guess this is a quirk of Google with pages getting high rankings. I’ve seen it happen with a commercial site I built for someone – they closed the business and traffic increased dramatically, six months later it is still busier than it ever was when it was being updated on a daily basis.
